Putting together access control solutions that include glass doors is one of the challenges for access control installers. What’s difficult is finding a solution that combines the aesthetic of glass with a reasonable level of security.
Physical barriers – doors, jambs, and walls – that are sufficiently robust to keep intruders out are at the heart of any access control system. Metal and wood are both strong materials. Their heavy construction not only provides strong support for locking devices, but it also allows wiring and/or sensors to be installed in frames or even within the bodies of doors where necessary.
Glass is a completely different story. Architects choose a glass appearance to increase feelings of light and space. Cluttering their precious glass with lock bodies and stray conduit is not in the plan. Recognizing aesthetics as the overarching agenda is critical for electronic security installers, who will need to consider surface mount solutions such as magnetics and shear locks in some cases instead of strikes and bolts.
Using products such as shear locks also presents some difficulties. Shear locks, on the other hand, are recessed into door frames and have the lowest visual profile. On the other hand, such installations can be jerky. Shear locks, like other magnetic locking devices, rely on a strong bond between magnet and armature to function properly. Unreliability will undoubtedly result from excessive overlap caused by poor installation, frame construction challenges, or sagging hinges.
What you may need to do with a glass door will necessitate some improvisation or customization. If wires must be run, you can cover and protect them with metal strips made of chrome or stainless steel. It may be possible in some cases to simply install a magnetic or shear lock armature onto a glass door frame, but if strikes are involved, the glazier may be required to customize the door to receive a lock installation.
Some glass doors must be manufactured with metal header tubes, rails, frames, or patches that are designed to allow the installation of electronic locking devices. This makes things a little easier. This is a configuration that opens up the integration process by allowing competent technicians to use the door’s robust metal footprint to position their hardware. However, there are customized doors that use curved glass all the way to the edge, which will necessitate custom solutions.
The most difficult aspect of glass doors is alignment, and it is not simply a matter of how the door is hung. Alignment is also determined by the accuracy of the site survey conducted prior to the design and construction of the door. Alignment is difficult for physical locking devices used with glass doors, and it’s even more difficult for electronic devices, which include strikes and bolts if they’re the preferred option.
The fact that most glass doors are floor to ceiling makes the job even more difficult. This means the doors are heavy, the working heights are approaching ladder heights, and extraneous protrusions from ceilings above or from the door edge will prevent a seal from being obtained. There’s also no chance of removing a door from its frame and devising an organic solution to a mistake caused by a minor miscalculation during installation. The job must be done correctly the first time, or a door worth tens of thousands of dollars will be ruined.
As facility managers, designers and building specifiers will attest, it can be challenging to find the right electronic access solution for a glass door. When glass is the focal point of an entrance design, cabling is not an option. Matching appropriate devices to the opening for a meeting room, office, treatment suite or any other glass door often involves compromises. Organisations may not find their ideal combination of security level, convenience, design and functionality.
But this need not be the case, because battery powered access control is now available in multiple styles and formats. Such devices can fit almost any type of glass door, cable- and wire-free. A minimal footprint ensures they leave the door’s aesthetic as it was designed.
